Our Mission

The mission of our company is to empower students to succeed tomorrow by integrating technology into education today. Through Sigma Coding classes, students are able to explore topics not typically covered in traditional curricula. These topics include computer science, which can then be applied through stand-alone programming, web development, mobile app creation, and robotics. The goal of our courses is to expose students to a wide variety of STEM topics (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) so that they can compete in an increasingly technological world.

Our Goals

The classes are designed to provide students with an early education into computer science, engineering, and applied physical science, which are not typically covered in formal K12 curricula. The classes are not designed to convince students to major in these fields when they reach college but rather to allow them to make an informed decision about different fields that may not receive as much exposure as ones they see on a daily basis. Studies have shown that students who are exposed to computer science and engineering fields at a young age are more likely to excel in academic fields such as science and mathematics.

Although the classes are open to boys and girls, we have a particular interest in encouraging the education of girls in the computing field. The national average for girls receiving Bachelor’s degrees in computing fields is 19%. We would like to continue to encourage girls into the field, and research has shown that if girls are exposed to computer science or engineering fields before entering high school (and possibly middle school), they are more likely to pursue more difficult science and mathematics classes. Since these fields do not have any inherent advantages based on gender, there is no reason the field should not support an equal population of girls and boys.

Codi Miller - Owner and Founder

Mrs. Miller earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California and has worked in numerous education-based organizations. Her passion to educate drove her to start Sigma Coding when she noticed that a degree in Biology was so much more valuable when coupled with the ability to program. Although programming classes are not typically required of undergraduate degrees in Biology, Mrs. Miller believes that all students should have a background in programming to succeed in the 21st century. Coupled with being female and a minority, she recognizes the need to empower all students in STEM fields no matter their race, gender, or household income.
Jeffrey Miller, Ph.D. - Technical Advisor

Dr. Miller has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering and Computer Science, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Computer Science, all from the University of Southern California. Dr. Miller is currently on the faculty in the Computer Science department at the University of Southern California, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses. He has organized and taught K12 summer camp programs for six years where students are exposed to programming through fun activities, including game development, robotics, and graphical user interfaces. His passion for youth education has been heightened by the growing field of technology along with the recent decline of under-represented ethnicities and girls graduating from STEM fields. Dr. Miller believes that every student should be given an equal opportunity to succeed in any field he/she chooses.
